"Cruelty to animals, also called animal abuse or animal neglect, is the infliction of suffering or harm upon non-human animals, for purposes other than self-defense. More narrowly, it can be harm for specific gain, such as killing animals for food or for their fur."

There are all kinds of shows on TV these days about animals and animal abuse. In fact, Animal Planet has several shows about animal cops, who go around and confiscate abused animals and fine their owners. It is this common in America today that there are TV shows about it and everybody has heard a story or has known someone personally who was involved in the abuse of animal. When I grew up it was even worse and far fewer people paid attention. but even with all this exposure, people continue to do awful things to animals, from minor, consistant abuses to outright acts of horrific cruelty. And with so many people paying attention today, many other people, looking for attention or for a thrill, will abuse animals or claim to. Facebook has many pages dedicated to glorifying or justifying the abuse of animals, from burning kittens alive to stomping on chickens. These pages are rife with violent rhetoric, people screaming venom at each other over these issues, from activists who are outraged by the pictures and graphic statements, to other people who feel that the protection of animals is the same as attacking human beings. There are people in our government today who feel that people should be able to do whatever they want to animals without restriction and that anything else is putting animal rights over human needs. These people do not believe that animals have any rights. This is true in many countries throughout the world, not all of which are third world. In fact, some third world countries do have animal welfare laws while more developed countries like China, Saudi Arabia and Mexico do not have a single law protecting animals. Countries like Egypt have laws on the books but these laws are never enforced.

Many of us love animals, starting with our own pets and moving along to other animals that cross our path in life. Many people love to feed birds and squirrels, watch whales and dolphins and take in pets to care for. Most of these efforts are well informed and ethical. But some of the things people do "for" animals borders on abuse. Such is the case in buying a dog from a pet store or breeder. Athough the motive is kindness, the desire to give a animal a good home, the action itself does nothing more than contribute to unscrupulous breeders, puppy mills, pet stores and other animal exploiters. Beleive it or not pet stores are not always humane in their methods at inventory control. Millions of people saw the videos of pet store employees shoving hamsters into pillow cases and slamming them into a table until they were all dead. This was done because they had too many hamsters. Seems like an outrageous choice in a world full of more sensible solutions but this is the choice somebody made. And the people who were hired to do this, just like the people who work in our slaughterhouses, have to develop a coldness and even dislike for animals in order to do this sort of horrible thing. So what are we teaching others through our own connections to animals? Is what we are doing kind and ethical or merely another boost to animal exploiters? If you truly care about animals, these questions must be answered.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? SEE BELOW

When I was young the neighborhood boys thought it was fine to toss ducks to their dogs and watch them tear them apart. These were mallards and muscovy ducks, all of which no longer thrive in that area. In fact, you can't find a single mallard or muscovy duck in those same waterways and canals. I used to find them with nails in their backs, with their tail feathers burned off or with their beaks cut with razors. People didn't like their poop being on the sidewalks in their neighborhoods. So now we do without ducks. I understand that many animal activities interfere with the desires of human beings. I understand that many people do not love anything or anyone other than their own. There are people who step over dieing people in the streets, shame on them, but they do. So if some people cannot feel love or compassion for other humans how can they be expected to feel anything for animals? This is why it is up to those who do care to make the effort to control the activities of those who don't. In this way, activism is necessary. If I had not taken the time, as a teen, to call the Audoubon Society, nobody would have come and taken the injured ducks and they would not have survived. And why is that important? If you have to ask that question then you are among those who are not concerned for animals and cannot help those who are or the animals they are trying to protect.

Many people think that putting animals "first" puts a strain on human beings. This might have been a realistic excuse back in the day when we all had to hunt for our food or fight off animals to protect our families or needed animal hides to stay warm in winter. But those days are long gone; our world is full of grocery stores packed with every animal imaginable at prices that serve the general public. There are tons of clothing stores, including thrift stores and charity shops for the poor among us, stocked to the brim with clothing of every kind made from non animal sources like cotton and hemp and polyester. Neighborhoods full of brick and mortar homes that no bear, tiger or even elephant even has a tiny shot of getting into unless a door is left open. Unless you travel into the wild and spend time fooling around there, it is unlikely some bear is going to turn over your car or some panther is going to leap on your back from an overhead tree. So these arguements about putting people first are specious. People are first, have been first and will remain so far into our questionable future. When vicious, cruel acts are performed, they are mostly performed by people on animals and not the vice versa. This is not to say there are no rare, notable instances involving alligators, bears, tigers, wolves and other predators but considering the numbers, these are of little consequence. Not when you compare it to the staggering numbers of animals that are worked through our industries, serving us as food, as employees, as entertainers, as pets, as textiles, toys, coats and whatever other sundry item that you may desire. If there is a demand for beaver tail hats, someone will provide them, beavers be damned. So people saying that somebody is putting animals "first" is pretty ridiculous.

But, seriously, what is wrong with wanting to spare a few along the way and to protect as many as possible from torture and misery? Why can't chickens be raised and kept for egg production without tearing out their beaks, cutting off their claws, shoving them into tiny cages, leaving them to squash each other to death...? Somebody once said to me, "well, they are going to die anyways", as his response to my complaints about the treatment of animals raised for food. My response is this: people are going to die anyways, as well. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon enough. So is the torture and maiming of humans acceptable as well? The very worst part of it for most animal welfare advocates is that the chickens do not die right away. A swift killing would be mercy and no one would complain so much about that. But this lingering torture, held in cages, living a life that God did not intend, merely to serve human appetites, beakless, clawless, wingless, trapped and squashed and fed hormones and antibiotics, is not acceptable for many who care.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? SEE BELOW

So what is wrong with a little mercy? Well, according to animal exploiters, it comes down to dollars and cents. If mercy is going to rob them of a few cents profit they will not indulge. The same is true of many pet owners who abuse their pets. If dog or cat food is too expensive right now, then the animals starve. I am not going to stand in judgement of people who are in financial crisis but I will condemn anyone who doesn't seek out better solutions for their pets. There are those people who consider animals to be a possession, an asset, like their car or house, and this attitude is very much like those who raise them for profit. Some people ask, when first seeing an animal, "what can it do?". And then if the animal doesn't do tricks, work the fields, hunt for or protect from something, then the animal is of no interest. This is the "working animal" mentality and it exists in all areas of our society. There is nothing wrong with people who think this way, it is deeply engrained in our culture and we have a long history of needing animals for work. Dogs pull sleds and help us hunt for food while oxen and horses pull plows. Cats kill mice, birds deliver messages, elephants entertain, camels and horses give rides, cows provide milk, donkeys carry loads, our pets provide us with love and companionship. Outside of these parameters, many people do not see a use for animals. They seem to forget that this world was not created by them and that these animals probably serve a purpose in that creation without our knowledge and regardless of our needs. But this "service animal" mentality is tightly interwoven with survival instincts as they exist in our current money driven culture. In many ways, this same ideology is applied to people, as well. You have heard the term, "he" or "she" is "useless", haven't you? Well it's the same train of thought and serves the same point of view.

Other people see animals as competitors. This is a way of thinking that comes from our agrarian background. Farmers are always battling nature to protect their crops. Animals are a threat to farmers, there is always the danger that a bird or a squirrel or a beetle or a deer will eat your corn before you can harvest it. These fears are real but in a world where there is more food than some people can eat and not enough for many others and lots of what we grow ends up in the trash, this argument is also specious. Until people practice conservation and try to work with nature instead of against it, cries about farm losses seem outrageous. Animals are our neighbors as much as other humans are and if you think it's ok to kill your neighbor over peanuts then I guess there is no talking you out of killing an animal over an ear of corn.

Why am I talking about people when this post is about animal abuse? Well, because it is people and only people who actually abuse animals. And their reasons for doing so are many and have kept them behaving this way for centuries.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP? SEE BELOW

Other than changing hearts and minds, which is a slow and often unsuccessful effort, animal advocates seek to get laws changed. Mostly these laws address the most egregious acts of violence, such as cutting off a sharks fins and tossing it back into the water to drown just so someone can have a bowl of soup. Other acts that people are seeking to see outlawed include videos made of women in high heels crushing tiny animals for the sexual excitement of the viewer; the selling of unlabeled fur garments made from skinning stolen pets for their fur, often while they are still alive; the selling of items poached from endangered species; the continued slaughter of whales during a whaling moratorium and the use of animals as entertainment in circuses, where many of them are beaten and starved by trainers. The kinds of abuse an animal can suffer is varied and ranges from horrific to mild. The abuse that most activists focus on is the more extreme and horrific acts, making every effort through available channels to bring about changes, mostly through petitions and protests aimed at creating new laws.

If you find the images and text on this page to be offensive or disgusting, please remember that this is the world you live in. Pretending that such acts of cruelty and injustice do not happen is tantamount to giving license to the perpetrators. I know this sounds harsh and it's a hard reality for most kind, compassionate people who find these sorts of things upsetting and frightening but it must be said. The problem of animal abuse, like the problem of murder, rape, missing women, human trafficking, and the many other causes we tackle on this blog, is growing every day. By ignorance we give license. Just because you refuse to watch the film about the chickens being mutilated doesn't mean the chickens aren't suffering. And just because you ignore the whining dog on the chain in your neighbors yard for weeks on end does not mean the dog will be fine. Beleive it or not, without your intervention, these horrors will continue. In fact, if no one stops these acts before they happen or punish them after the fact, then the abusers get stronger, bolder. They no longer only whip the dog now they hit it with baseball bats. Please think in your mind what happens with children who are abused and realize now that it is exactly the same thing. Animals are just as helpless as children and can be abused in similar ways. And would you just sit around while the child next door screamed in pain? Just because you do not hear animals screaming does not mean they aren't.

I totally understand the apathy that many people suffer from. But I have also witnessed the motivation of people who suddenly become aware. I have seen people make big changes in their lifestyle overnight and these were people who were blissful in their ignorance and not really willing to be shown the ugly truth. So although I understand apathy, as I have been happy be to be ignorant myself in the past, I also realize that once people know the truth, if the truth is ugly enough, they will do whatever it takes to change things. So I am here to show you the ugly truth and can only hope that it will break your heart, as it did mine and make you want to help out. And, believe it or not, it does not have to cost you money. Most activists advocate for animals and never spend a dime; others make donations of unwanted items like clothing or food to shelters; and then others help actual animals in shelters or sanctuaries by volunteering. There are many ways you can advocate for animals that will not cost you money. However, if you do have money to share and have a mind to do so, I am sure the many charities out there will appreciate it greatly.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

The biggest contribution someone can make is in their day to day life. The changes you make to your lifestyle have the greatest chance of making an impact on the lives of animals. This includes treating animals more kindly, paying attention to the animals in your environment, adopting a shelter pet rather than buying one in a pet shop, calling for help when you find an animal in distress or one that has been abused, showing intolerance to abuse from the people around you, speaking up for animals when the need arises, being careful not to harm an animal when the possibility arises and calling for help if harm could not be avoided. These are small changes that make big differences and won't crimp your lifestyle or swallow your wallet. The very easiest and least painful way of helping out is to shop on this blog. If you have a mind to do something more but don't want to be an advocate or activist, then consider volunteering at a shelter or a zoo; calling the zoos, aquariums and circuses in your area to let them know you care about their treatment of animals; boycotting items that are made with cruel treatment of animals or animal testing; donating used clothes and unwanted items to shelter thrift stores; volunteering at the local pet shelter; feeding wild animals and feral cats in your neighborhood; rescuing needy animals in your local area. All of these are things you can do with your time that won't cost you money or require intense dedication or activism.

For those of you who would like to do even more and get active for animals, there are many levels of involvement you can engage in. For starters, signing petitions is a helpful activity; you would not believe how many laws have been passed or rejected as a result of petitions. There are links on this post and on the sidebar for various petitions involving the issues of animal welfare. Activism might also involve changing your diet; eating less animal products and moving more into a cruelty free diet. Many animal welfare advocates are vegetarians or vegans, however not all, and it is not necessary to be vegan to be helpful with animals. Still many dedicated activists beleive that you cannot really help on a large scale without giving up animal products, including leather and fur as well as meat and milk. Just the act of cutting back or quitting the eating of animal flesh makes a big difference. Every person who does this saves the lives of hundreds of animals every year. Another activist agenda includes demonstrating. This can be a protest at a restaurant over the cruel business of foie gras, a demonstration in front of a testing facility, a sit in on the grounds of a slaughterhouse or a march on the capitol over a particular piece of legislation. As much attention and excitement as sit ins, marchs and protests create, they are nowhere near as effective as petitions, letter writing, phone calling and boycotting are. The best tools of the activist are those that affect the image and profitability of any given industry. So write letters to the editor, send petitions to lawmakers, make calls to industry big wigs, boycott products that you find offensive and give literature to the people you think will pay attention. These are simple but effective actions you can take for animals on any given day without having to quit your day job or take out a second mortgage.

And then there is the last and most intense level of activism that you can engage in. If you have the free time and some money you can spare along the way, then you can be an activist "on the ground". Besides demonstrations and protests, activists on the ground hold conventions, make presentations and also create and show videos. They also do more aggressive things like breaking into labs and stealing the animals; setting animals free at zoos and parks; releasing animals from fur farms and slaughterhouses; creating enough havoc to shut down certain businesses and doing property damage to abusers. All of these actions are illegal and usually only engaged in by activists who are frustrated, angry and tired of hearing excuses. All activists get tired of hearing excuses. But these actions are not as effective as you think they would be. Much like the demonstrations in front of the chicken joint, the freeing of animals from privately owned firms, turns the public against the cause and encourages lawmakers to call animal rights activists "terrorists". So although it can be personally rewarding and lets the activist feel like a hero for the moment, these actions are not encouraged because they just not effective and can actually be detrimental. If the idea is to win hearts and minds, this is not the way to do it.

So how do you engage on the highest level as an activist and make the most difference for animals? Well, first of all, you engage in all of the activities already listed for the lower levels of involvement. You stop eating animals, you rescue animals if you can, you adopt and don't buy pets, you feed and care for wildlife, you defend animals at every opportunity and so on. You also volunteer, create and sign petitions, write letters to editors and all that. But as an activist on the ground, you will also go to demonstrations and show videos to your friends. If you get the chance, you will film animal abuse to increase awareness, whether this is your neighbor beating his dog or the torture of farmed animals in private facilities. You will show these videos at every opportunity and come up with creative ways to interest other people in your message. This is the level where your work as an activist will be as intense as your work at your job. This is where you make the most difference and make the biggest sacrifice.

So if you want to help animals, you can see that there are many ways to do it and at many different levels of commitment. You don't have to spend money or even much time if you don't want to or simply can't. You can make a difference simply by bringing your shopping to this blog. CAMPING

Anyone who has been camping can tell you that you are either a happy camper or you're not. If you love camping, you really love it. Most people who do love camping do it in style. They buy RVs and equip them with amenities. They find camp sites in areas they love to visit and rent space for a weekend. Camping for these people is as good as staying in a hotel and if they travel a lot, it's big money saver over time. It makes sense. But for most of us camping in this manner is not our first experience. In fact, RVs weren't even invented until 1914 and the first ones were not anything like the ones we have today. In fact, the first one was made out of wood and it was called the 'travel log". Most of what might be called RVs today were actually makeshift accommodations added to existing vehicles. People put beds on the roof of Model T's and put shades in the windows of larger cars, taking out backseats and making beds and whatnot. They were very crude and not much better than using a tent. The Airstream came out in the 1930s and it was sort of a travel trailer. It was towed behind the car. People nicknamed it the "Tin Lizzy" and then they remodeled their Model Ts to be traveling bedrooms and this was how most people went camping.

Today, many of us still think of camping as sleeping in a tent and, in fact, most people camp this way even now. RVs are not cheap and many people cannot afford not only the vehicle but the gas and upkeep as well. So this is why you find so many tents and trailers in campgrounds while you still only see a few motor homes. Motor homes as we know them today were not even created until they created the Winnebago in 1966. It was the Winnebago that made camping popular with the American people. Until then, camping was a grueling, bug infested, overheated, inconvenient affair where there was no toilet, no way to prepare decent food and all the water was warm. Putting a can of beans on a small, barely lit fire is not a way most people prefer to eat. So the invention of the RV was a huge success, with the onboard electricity that supplied power to cherished appliances like refrigerators and stoves. Now you didn't have to settle for warm food out of melted down ice chest charred over an open fire.

But even so the use of RVs, travel trailers and campers is restricted to certain classes of people. Only those with enough money for a large tank of expensive gas, the repairs the engine inevitably needs over time, the insurance required by the state and the supplies necessary to equip a motor home or RV are able to use and maintain one. So this is a toy for the rich or, at the very least, the upper middle class. For the rest of us, it is travel trailers, campers or tents. If you are among those who use a tent, there is good news. There are all kinds of new supplies for the tent camper. This is because there is a huge surge in popularity for outdoor sports like hiking, climbing, fishing, hunting and cycling. Most people who want to hike or hunt use tents. Tents make it possible to settle on the side of a mountain or deep in the brush, in places where an RV or travel trailer are unable to navigate or may not even fit. Also people who love to visit with, study and enjoy wildlife have a better shot at getting into the thick of it with a tent. Nothing like a noisy engine and a big metal box to chase off any local animals and birds. So tents make sense.

Camping is an inexpensive alternative to high priced hotels and cars. If you camp in a tent you can bring a cycle and get to just about anywhere you need to in a local community. If you bring the RV or the trailer then you are stocked up and don't need to consider spending any more money for anything other than space rent, gas and sewer. Many campgrounds have public bathrooms with showers. They may also have vending machines in the office area with just about everything from laundry soap to fishing tackle. Boar hunting is a great sport, which many people love to participate in. However, it is not available in every part of the world. But there are highly regarded hunting lodges that will help you organize your boar hunting trip as well as give you a great comfy place to stay in during your vacation. Whether you want to head down south, way down south, to the west coast or to the land down under, you will have a variety of boar hunting options on your next vacation to choose from.

In South Carolina, you will be able to hunt on private land which may be more comfortable for some hunters. This way your hunting grounds will be near your accommodations so you will not have to travel far and many of the private institutions will be handicap accessible. Many people do not consider California to be a happening boar and hog hunting place but if you look closely enough, you can definitely catch some hunting action on the west coast. You will especially be able to hunt for wild boars and wild hogs in California. You can hunt throughout the entire state such as in Southern Monterrey County or in the Central Coast of Florida. There is also many private land options as well to choose from.

There are other hunters out there who are more interested in international hunting adventures. Two of the greatest countries outside of the United States to go hunting for wild boar and hogs is in Argentina and in Australia. There are various locations in Argentina where one can go to hunt including La Pampa, Rio Negro, Buenos Aires, Chubut, Chaco, Entre Rios and Neuquen. If you are more interested in the land down under, then you can take a boar hunting vacation to West Queensland, Australia where you will be able to hunt during the day or night with the weapon of your choice.

When it comes to boar and hog hunting, there are many options to choose from. FISHING

Fishing is a sport that's relaxing and based on friendship, but when it gets a little competitive, start stringing up your jig stick! Jig fishing has a tendency to separate the best anglers from the rest, and it tends to separate the big fish from the little ones. Fish instinctively understand what can or cannot fit down their gullets. A small fish that's been eating well is usually not interested to attack and digest a bulky jig. Big fish, on the other hand, prefer a bulky meal that a jig represents to them. Five fish caught on jigs will be bigger than five fish caught on any other type of lure. Still, jig fishing is a difficult skill, and it takes a lot of effort even for a jig master to drill out those five fish. It's not easy!

A jig is not a lure for open water or unobstructed bottom. Jig fishing is usually done in something - heavy weed or wood cover, flooded brush, sunken tree tops, rock rubble, cypress knees, tulle berms, etc. The snaggier, the better. Even in open areas, a jig will do best when it contacts small, isolated pieces of cover or slightly rougher bottom patches.

A jig is first and foremost, a drop bait. Jig fishing in shallow water (0 to 6 feet) gets you many fish on the drop before the jig even hits the bottom. If the jig is not accosted on the way down, just let it lay motionless for a while. Fish cannot stand this and will pick the jig off the bottom as it lays there. Still no hit? Jiggle it around without moving it forward - and let it lay motionless again. Repeat the jiggle and pause once or twice, then wind it in and drop it in another spot. It really doesn't pay to try to work it across the bottom in shallow cover. If the fish did not hit you on the way down or on the pause between jiggles, it's probably not going to hit you as you swim or drag it back across bottom. So just wind it in quick and drop it in another spot. The initial drop is the key. The jig has lots of visible and audible appeal as it drops. And yes, use liberal doses of fish attractant. Rattles are optional. With or without rattles. I am happy with my catches.

Jig fishing in deeper water is different. You can cast it out away from you, and reel it steadily across bottom until it bounces into any sort of underwater cover. Once you contact cover, stop reeling and just jiggle and bumble the jig all into the cover while hardly moving it forward at all. Still use the jiggle and pause tactic, and expect to get picked up on the pause. In deep water, you will get fish that whack you when you reel up to make another cast. So always let the jig hang suspended for a moment when you reel up all the way. When you get six feet off the bottom, jiggle it as it hangs there and see if you get bit. No takers? Just reel up and cast again.

The key to detecting bites in either shallow or deep water is to always know what your line weighs. As an alternative, you could become a line watcher which means to stare intently at the line where it enters the water. If you see the line twitch, streak off to the side or any other unusual movement in the line, it means a fish is toying with your jig. In the long run, however, you will become a better jig fisherman if you learn to line weigh rather than line watch. Let's talk about this.

You should know what your jig feels like at all times: When it drops; When it rests on the bottom; When you are lifting it up off bottom. Your jig can never feel any different than it is - it will always feel the same. Sometimes wind can encumber your feel. In wind, you may need to upsize the jig weight to retain its feel.

If you ever feel anything different, it can only ever be one of two things: You are or will soon be snagged OR a fish has the jig!

Now, you often hear advice that if you feel anything different, you should heroically haul off and set the hook. But if you do that, you will have a snag more often than you have a fish. What to do? Load increasingly steady but slight tension onto the line and rod tip by drawing the tip up or reeling in ever so slowly. If it is a snag, you will feel a lack of life, and you should back off to try to work yourself out of the snag before you get snagged too deeply. If it is a fish, you will feel one of two things:

Weightlessness. Absolutely nothing. Like your jig is floating in space. Reel in to get slack out of the line until you feel weight, load the rod tip, then whack away!

Vibrancy. Some feeling of life. Trust me, you'll instinctively know it's a live feeling of some sort on your line even if it is indescribable to put into words. Reel in just enough to begin loading the rod tip and whack away!

If you believe you had a fish on, but it spit the bait before you can whack it, JUST LEAVE THE BAIT THERE. You can usually jiggle it a bit and they will often pick it up again. Then whack them ASAP! Largemouth may come back once. Smallies may give you numerous chances.

So that's called line weighing, and it is a better and more reliable skill to learn than line watching.

Line weighing is the key to jig fishing success.

It is fascinating to imagine how many boats there are in America. There is a vast expanse of water suitable for all kinds of boating experience. The coastal area as well as all the inland lakes and rivers make this recreational adventure possible. The range in size and value of the boats in use runs from the small rowboat to cabin cruisers and yachts. Historically boats were one of the first modes of transportation. The Bible records the construction of Noah's ark occurring many centuries before Christ. The dimensions and construction materials of the ark are given in Genesis chapter six. The ark was made of cypress wood and covered with pitch, both inside and out. It was 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high. This huge boat was likely the largest water craft built before the modern era.

My first experience with boating started when I was very young. My father often took me to the river early in the morning before sun up. He taught me how to paddle and to fish. I well remember the excitement I felt while getting quietly into the boat and gliding silently over the surface to the areas where we hoped to catch fish. He emphasized being quiet so we wouldn't scare the fish. Our equipment was very simple, consisting of a pole, a line, sinker and hook. We also had homemade floats attached to the line to indicate when a fish was taking the bait. We fished with the intention to take enough home for a delicious meal. We only released the small ones. I wanted to do my share of paddling so he taught me how to pick an object in the distance and go straight toward it. He explained how to twist the paddle during the stroke to keep going in a straight line. Practicing this skill added interest to the outing, especially when the fish weren't biting.

FLEA CONTROL FOR DOGS AND CATS

I have had a lot of experience with flea infestations, several of which were so bad I did not think I could conquer them. It got to where I was up all night, swatting and spritzing, with my arms and legs sometimes totally covered with bloody black specks. I ended up spending hundreds of dollars on many different treatments and it took quite some time to put them all to death but I did it. Since that time, I have been able to keep my cats completely flea free. I will tell you some of the secrets that I learned the hard way and probably save you a ton of money and time.

The first thing is control over the animal. You just can't let your cat or dog run around outside for hours on end every single day and not expect them to bring home some bugs. You can protect them to some extent but too much exposure will overcome even the best flea destroyers mostly because the animals will lose a lot of the product just in their normal routines. My cats not only licked a lot of any application off, they rolled on pavement and in grass, taking off whatever might have remained. Most topical treatments are good, I won't dismiss them, in fact, I recommend many of them, but they don't last that long. I think most of them last about two weeks. But I do not recommend refreshing the treatments with extra doses or shortening the recommended dosage period. They should only be given every four weeks in the amount recommended by the manufacturer. If they wear off, use other treatments to make up the shortfall and make sure that the second treatment is non toxic and doesn't have medications in it.

When I got hit with the biggest flea infestation of my life, I went to the usual suspects. I treated all of the cats with Advantage. This knocked the fleas back a bit but it didn't last that long. On a big infestation, these topical treatments can't cut it on their own. The effect wore off in a couple of weeks and the cats had scabs all over them from the fleas. So I switched to Frontline and dosed them with that. This lasted a little longer but I don't think that's because Frontline is better than Advantage, in reality, but that the effect of both over time had a little bigger punch. But again, this didn't last that long and by the end of the month, the fleas were everywhere. So I was frantic. I wanted to use something that would work but not saturate my house with toxic chemicals. That's when I read about Diatomaceous Earth. This is a powder that comes in a bag and you sprinkle it on the carpets, the furniture, the floors, the yard, wherever the fleas are bouncing around. You can also put it on your pet but don't too much of this because the powder will dehydrate the animal. It actually works by dehydrating the flea. The tiny shards of crushed earth cut the fleas exoskeleton and then the powder dries them up from the inside out. Gross but effective. At least you don't have to see it. They just sort of disappear with no drama. Anyways, I dusted the entire house and yard with it and this worked for a time. But just like the spot treatments, the effect wore off and the cats were bringing them back inside so the problem not only continued but multiplied. This was a genuine horror story for me because it was mostly my bedroom that got infested because the cats sleep with me. However, the fleas were so darned bad that the cats wouldn't even come in the room! In fact, they wouldn't get on the floor or carpet at all and spent the next few months on the countertops.

Because the diatomaceaous earth worked so well at first, I thought I just had to keep it up and it would finish my problem. I bought 1 pound of it each time and ended up buying several pounds over time so I would advise anyone with a flea problem in a sizeable residence with a yard to get several pounds right at the outset and save yourself a lot of trouble. You have to dust everywhere and not be stingy about it. Do not leave a single room undusted and make sure you get under every cushion on the couch, on the floor or carpets under furniture, back into the nooks, crannies and shadows. The reasons for this is that the damned fleas are smart enough to avoid the dust if there is a way for them to do that. They will all huddle up under a single piece of furniture and leap from there to your arms or to the back of your cat or dog and this way steer clear of the DE. I wached them do this and boy did it piss me off. So do not fall short on the DE. Order enough to cover every single square inch and be prepared to dust until you are exhausted. And I will tell you this. It worked. It did not end my problem because I was still letting my cats outside but it killed them all until a new batch arrived. So if you can keep your pets contained and are sure you have covered every inch of your property, Diatomaceous Earth will definitely fix your flea problem. And an added bonus is that it is relatively cheap and it is totally non toxic. No one will get poisoned by DE.

In the long run, though, DE did not solve my flea problem. After all the fleas were gone for what seemed like maybe a couple of weeks, they slowly but surely came back. This because, as I already told you, I let the cats back outside. At that time I thought the infestation had been in the apartment when we moved in because we hadn't lived there that long when the fleas appeared. I had not yet realized that the entire complex was infested and that the woods surrounding the place had never been treated. So the cats eventually brought the evil fleas back into our home. And when the infestation reappeared I realized that the cats were bringing them in from outside and that the fleas had not just been in the apartment. At that point, I decided to start bathing the cats. Now, this may have been the biggest mistake I ever made because my cats were so upset by this that one of them was heaving hard while he was fighting me. This was sad and unnecessary. But I will say this. The shampoos I used were good. I used Adams Flea and Tick DeLimonene Shampoo and I chose it because it contained a citrus insecticide that was non toxic. It did get rid of most of the fleas on the two cats who would let me finish the bath. It also prevented a lot more fleas from getting onto these two cats. But the other two, who just would not tolerate the bathing, were ridden and it didn't take long for those fleas to multiply. The house was, once again, jumping with fleas.

I was getting desperate. I spent endless hours online studying about fleas and flea killers. I had lived in a place a few years earlier with a roach problem and had tried everything in that instance and failed. I felt I just could not end up with a problem I could not fix. The thought of living with fleas this intense for the period of time I had to live with the bugs was just depressing. So my next step was to go to the pest control supply sites and read about the stuff they used for fleas. And this is where I heard about insect growth regulators. I had never heard of such a thing but it sure sounded good. Stop the larvae from becoming adults and those that did become adults would be sterile! This sounded like something I needed to try. So I bought some Adams Plus Flea & Tick Mist with IGR in the 32 oz size. I used every drop of it spraying the carpet and the furniture in the house. I never once treated any of the cats because I ran out before I got there. But boy did this stuff work! It didn't happen overnight. In fact, I was sort of bummed out for a week while I watched them jumping around, happily going about their bloody business. But then it just happened. They disappeared. And I mean almost instantly all at once. In one day they just disappeared and I did not see a single flea again. I sat up nights looking for them, suspiciously waiting for their return, having lost my faith in all these products. But they were gone. Really gone. So I can tell you with no trepidation that this stuff works. Since I ran out of Adams and it isn't the cheapest stuff out there, I bought some plain old IGR in a bottle. The kind I actually bought is called Martins IG Regulator Concentrate with Nylar. It is not applicable as it is, you have to mix it with water and apply it. So I bought a measuring cup to use just for this and a new spray bottle. And I have kept the stuff just in case. But I can tell you right now, my flea problem is gone. Of course, I started restricting the cats a lot more and we have moved to a new apartment, but we did not bring any fleas with us. They were dead before we packed.

Since I have had a great deal of experience with various flea and insect control products I would like to make some suggestions to those pet owners who would like to fix their flea problem. I do not recommend just any product for use on your pet. I have tried to limit the products I present on this page to those that I feel have had the best reputations after long periods of public use. I will not name certain products that I feel are dangerous or even deadly but you will find that they are not included on this list. Fur, Human Vanity and Animal Misery

Are you looking to buy fur this Christmas? Have you purchased fur in the recent past, because it is so luxurious, and have a coat or two proudly hanging in your overstuffed closet? Do you buy coats or shirts with fur collars or fur trim? Perhaps pencils with fur thingamigs or furry toys for the cat or furry stuffed animals or toys for the kids with fur trimmings? Often we buy these things because we love animals and want to feel their fur in our hands. Often we just want to connect with something wild and love having their fur in our possession. Often our children relish the idea of playing with furry toys and having fur pouches or fur trimmed booties. All because, in truth, we love animals and want to get closer to them. But what you do not realize that by buying fur products you are not connecting with animals in the way you imagine, in fact, the animal you are handling is dead and the death that animal died is something you cannot imagine. In reality, beyond the fantasy of wealth, richness or even animal love, you are doing nothing more than giving money to some of the most evil and cruel butchers in the world. The money you use to buy these fur items might as well be sticky with blood

I know there are those of you who know that fur is cruel. Many of you make an effort to buy nothing but fake fur, or what you think is fake fur, to save the animals and still obtain the luxurious feeling of soft, luscious fur. There is nothing like laying on a fur blanket in the nude or rubbing our cold noses with a fur mitten or scarf. As a child, I loved laying on the bear rug in front of the fire, putting my tiny fingers into the bullet hole on the bears head, never even thinking about what that meant. And no one can fault you for doing the same; loving something so luxurious and rich, so warm and sensual as fur. But do you realize that fake fur is hardly ever fake? That is costs a lot more to make fake fur than to simply skin a cat? Especially when they can get that cat by scouring neighborhoods and just stealing peoples' pets. And, yes, they do this. No, I'm not exaggerating. In the world as we know it today, where money is hard to obtain and worth very little once gotten, people the world over are looking for the easiest methods to obtain the most cash. So when you pay top dollar for something made of fur, fake or otherwise, you are motivating these people to continue doing business. So when you go home to your dog or your cat or you pass a furry creature in a park or meadow on your way about town, then consider this: these are the animals you are wearing when you buy fur, fake or not.

There are videos all over the internet. Videos that show horrible actions taken against animals in order to obtain fur. Cats screaming and trying to crawl their way out of boiling vats. Dogs shaking from head to toe as they are skinned alive, hanging by their feet. Foxes with stunned, fixed stares, hanging from grapples with their fur hanging in strips from their bloody carcasses. Although many of these furred animals are wild and are caught in traps or otherwise lured to their death, many of them are also pets taken from neighborhoods and beaten to stunned submission. And when you think about it, if someone is cruel and wicked enough to consider skinning a screaming animal alive without thought or care, then the act of theft is an easy one. Just snatch up every furry thing that crosses your path and go about doing the deed. And when women the world over will pay a precious fortune to wrap themselves in fur, the motivation to do this is great. Only if women cease to do this will the fur industry come to a halt.

Have you ever heard a rabbit scream? Or seen a fox crawling in it's own blood, trying to escape a relentless razor? Have you ever seen the terrified look in a cat's eyes as it listens to the bloody, writhing, screaming murder of the other cats in the cages around him? Can you imagine how that fear feels? I can think of the women who waited until Ted Bundy got around to them after watching their fellow captives die a horrible death. And I can think of a lot of other instances with ugly men doing horrible things to women and children. Would you give Ted Bundy money? Would you buy earrings made out of a dead women's teeth? Then why on earth would you buy the bloody skin of a tortured animal? An animal not unlike the ones you say you love.

There are designers who still choose to use fur in their designs. They do this, knowing full well the source of the fur and the manner in which these animals die. There isn't one in business today who can claim innocence in this matter. PETA and the HSUS have made sure of it. Videos of screaming animals have been shown to these people over and over again. When they choose to ignore this moral outrage in order to make money for their personal pleasure, they are telling us that they have no ethics, no compassion, no heart. And when you purchase these designs, you tell them you agree with them, that animals do not deserve compassion or consideration. If you think this might work for you, then you need to view these videos.. there are links at the bottom of this post on this page. And if, after you view these videos, and you still do not care, then you need the kind of help I cannot give you. A heart without compassion is a very sad and lonely one, indeed.

I am assuming that 99% of the people who read this are caring and loving people. I assume that you cannot tolerate the rape of children, the torture of women, the selling of human beings into slavery and other outrages in the world around you. In that same vein, I am assuming that you also love and care about the animals in your life and would not tolerate this sort of cruelty being imposed upon them. Would you not pull your pet from a raging fire? Would you not run to their aid if you heard them screaming? Can you watch the video of a screaming rabbit, being anally electrocuted, and not want to rush in there and save that animal? Then why on earth would you give your hard earned money to these kind of people? Why would you buy fur and send them the message that you are ok with this, that you agree with them, that you support the torture and sadistic murder of little animals the world round??

I know most of you are avoiding fur for the most part. Most people today don't buy it or if they do, they buy fake. But please be warned that fake fur is often real fur and you can tell this by paying attention before purchasing. Before buying what you think is FAUX but which could be real fur (dog/cat/fox/rabbit), please do the simple test:

1) REAL FUR:

Feels smooth, soft. Blow on longhaired fur, it divides such as soft hair. Often made of several layers of thin hair, the fibers form a dense under-wool through which the longer hairs stick out. The base is leather and resists a pin. It burns like human hair, smells similar.

2) FAUX FUR:

Feels coarse, simpler structure; pierces easily with a pin. Individual hairs are often the same length and have an even color. Burns like plastic; hair feels hard between finger and thumb. Close to light, its shine is different from real fur.

The fur industry has a long and hallowed history here in America. During the days of settlement, when Americans were exploring on this continent, the weather was much more challenging than it is today. There weren't the kind of building materials or capacity for construction and many people made cabins out of wood or put together lean tos. The cold winter was harsh and challenging, taking more lives than you can imagine. The Indians were used to the winters, though, and had gone to making fur blankets, fur serapes, fur hats and other fur items from animals they killed and ate. They would often trade fur with the white man in exchange for tobacco or alcohol. Over time, with experience, white men began trapping for fur and making their own textiles. Although people were already making clothes of cotton, cornsilk and hemp, these clothes were not always warm enough to face the harsh winters of the northest points of north America. Settlers from Europe had never faced such extremes: harsh, driving heat in the summer and driving snow with plummeting temps in the winter. So fur became a necessity. Without it, many people would have died.

For this, we can thank God and the wonderful animals he created. But, as civilization grew and our survival skills have become sharper, we have devised many other methods of creating needed textiles. Today we have warm cottons, cotton blends, hemp and bamboo materials that give warmth and have durability. In fact, they last longer and are easier to care for than fur. We also have methods of making fake fur, truly fake fur, that is even thicker, warmer, more luxurious and more durable than the real thing. Even if you find that the price on fake fur is a bit out of your reach, remember that when you reach for the cheaper, real stuff, you are condoning the theft of companion animals and the trapping of wild animals, for which the skinners pay nothing. It is the theft of animals like cats, dogs, rabbits, foxes, raccoons, raccoon dogs and beavers that allows the skinners to ask less for their products. It is not because it is fake. It is actually because it is real. Remember that. There is just no excuse in our world today, with temperature control in every home in America, with textiles that will keep you warm under any conditions and the luxury of not having to face the worst temperatures in order to get through the day, there is simply no excuse for indulging in the cruel slaughter of innocent animals to wear their skin. No other reason but vanity.

There are people who do not believe these stories about fur farming and consider the videos to be doctored or invented. There are also people who believe that global warming is a hoax or that the earth is really flat or that 9-11 was engineered by our government. You are entitled to believe whatever you choose to believe but why not choose on the compassionate side? What on earth would make fur a necessity in your life? Why would nothing else do? It is true that certain models and celebrities who have reputations for being bad girls or rogue personalities benefit by blatantly wearing fur and giving everyone the finger. But what they do not seem to realize is that they are giving animals the finger, not you or I. It is not I who is crawling in a bloody pile to my death. It is not I who makes a dollar when a fur is purchased or worn. It is not I who loses a penny when a fur is not purchased or worn. The only people benefitting from fur are exploiters of fur bearing animals and the only living beings that are losing anything in this horrific practice is a dog, a cat, a rabbit, a fox, a raccoon, a raccoon dog.. and all kinds of other furry innocent animals, including pets.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Now that you have the facts, you might be interested in knowing what you can do to help. Well, there are lots of ways. There is no one, single action you can take that will end fur farming for good but contributions of various kinds are necessary. Without support the organizations that are trying to fight this will never succeed.

This is a fragile victory, however, for Canada's commercial seal hunt persists. IFAW continues to document and expose abuses of the commercial hunt and press for an end to this cruel, unsustainable slaughter. Over the years, the small team of committed campaigners reaching out to help seals has grown to become the world's leading international animal welfare organization. Over the years, IFAW has helped to protect species threatened by consumer demand in China such as bears, tigers, elephants and seals as well as the Tibetan antelope, a species endemic to China that is threatened by a demand from luxury markets in the West for “shahtoosh shawls,” which are woven from their fur.

The growth of the Internet poses new threats to wildlife. The escalation in global Internet use increases the ease with which traders can fill burgeoning consumer appetites. The rules, regulations and laws governing the trade in endangered species are often complex, diverse and differ from country to country, yet the online trade has no boundaries. IFAW conducts investigations of online markets around the world and provides recommendations to site owners and governments that can enhance regulation and enforcement.

These investigations of online marketplaces in China are critically important because, as of April 2010, China became the largest online user country (430 million) in the world. Based on the data gathered during online wildlife trade investigations, IFAW developed a routine information-sharing mechanism with law enforcement agencies and private companies involved in Internet commerce. IFAW has alerted enforcement agencies about illegal trade activities (both online and offline), identified emerging trends and helped provide evidence for prosecutions. As a result, online shopping sites promptly eliminated illegally traded wildlife products. In partnership with these sites, we constantly update the list of “key words” to improve the product screening processes Internet companies use to block out illegally traded wildlife products.

To enhance the welfare for companion animals, IFAW assists municipal governments in promulgating humane dog regulations that mandate vaccination, encourage spay/neuter to control population and promote responsible pet ownership. In addition to supporting local animal rescue groups that provide care to animals in distress, IFAW established the Animal Resource Center Web site (www.ifaw-arc.org.cn) where Chinese animal lovers can discuss issues of mutual interest, from individual animal care and adoptions to the need for China to pass anti-cruelty legislation that covers all animals.

While China has a Wildlife Protection Law (1989) that protects endangered wild animals with utilitarian value, there is no law to prevent cruelty to animals. IFAW is supporting draft legislation which would govern the way wild and domestic animals are treated in all situations. A recent online poll of 63,000 people found that 89% support an animal welfare law for China.

It is encouraging to see public support for animal welfare in China rising. Over a decade ago, when IFAW first started working in the country, we intentionally translated the organization’s name as “guo ji ai hu dong wu ji jin hui,” which means “international fund for love and protection of animals.” The intention was to emphasize human responsibility toward animals and to address the concern that “animal welfare” might not have been readily acceptable in China.

But public attitudes toward animals are definitely changing in China. One indication of this change is the number of young people across the country who participate in IFAW’s annual animal welfare education campaign—Animal Action Week.

Believe it or not, these online petitions make a difference. When the numbers are large enough, it causes authorities to look at issues they would otherwise ignore. We need stronger laws and more money thrown at this situation in order to save the lives of more innocent animals and put a stop to this cruel industry.

Homeless Military Vets, Apathy and Patriotism

You see them all the time. They are everywhere. You see them when you are window shopping, driving the city streets or walking your dog. They are on benches, on sidewalks, in the alleyways and in the ditches. They do not look right to you and you avoid them. They are poor, they are lost, they are mentally ill or they are addicted to drugs or alcohol. We all tend to think they are low lifes, scum, people who don't deserve better. But do you realize that, according to ABC News, 33% of our homeless are actually our Military Vets? More than half of those that are homeless are veterans of the Viet Nam war. This is the boomer generation, the generation to which many of us belong. And every single one of us remembers the horror of that war; the nightly body counts, the first hand accounts from Walter Cronkite, the endless suffering and death. Yes, we were against the war and right we should have been... but spitting on the vets was a horrible mistake. These are men who have gone to war for US. Who have fought and faced horrors for US. We are free, we are prosperous and we are spoiled with luxuries because of them. And yet they lay in our alleyways, their faces hidden by dirt and darkness, their minds confused and muddled with drugs, unable to cope. And what do we do about it? Nothing that matters.

Oh, I know that apathy is a strong word. It implies that you don't care. And you tell yourself, and me, too that you do, in fact, care. But what you don't realize is that you do not care in ways that matter. Chanting at political rallies where would be public servants tell you they will support war funding won't fix it. Electing people who you think have war experience or are sympathetic to the military won't do it, either. Waving flags on the 4th of July, putting sticky yellow ribbons on your car, buying books or movies about patriots, all the symbolism we love to indulge in, just won't do it. None of this will feed or shelter a single man who has come back from a war our government has thrust upon him and come back crazy, broken hearted, unable to cope. Tossing him aside as "weak" is a weak excuse for more apathy. And it doesn't help that our society holds up an image of soldiers as some how stronger, better, smarter and more able to cope than the rest of us. What about the word, "human" do people not understand when they talk about war? These are just boys, just our children, just our bravest little boys, that we celebrate when they leave.. and then just forget when they return. They come back battle scarred, traumatized, shattered. And the military war machine has the gall to dismiss them as "weak sisters" or fakers. In their hallowed minds of self delusion, they have drilled us all into the false belief that war somehow doesn't affect the strongest and the best. Somehow, they come out of the hellhole in tact and ready for more. And we have bought this image lock, stock and barrel. But the problem is, it isn't real.

The reality is that the government doesn't fund the Veterans Administration and it doesn't give any benefits to our returning soldiers if they come back alive. If they die, they pay something to the survivors. It's almost as if we plan on all of them dieing, and make no provisions for those don't. This comes from the general belief that the soilders who come back are strong and clever and therefor unscathed by the horrors they witnessed or the pains they endured. But what if they come back without a leg or an arm? What about brain injuries and PTSD? Brain injuries and PTSD are still to be recognized by the power structure in the military. They claim none of this is real, in the same manner that they denied the effects of Agent Orange and long enough they did this so that most of the claimants are dead. But anyone who has been through a traumatic event, from children who are abused by loved ones to people who have been lost at sea, can tell you that these things are not only real, but they can destroy your life. When you look at the vets laying in the dark alleys of your hometown, does the word destruction come to mind? It should. Because, essentially, we have destroyed their lives and given them nothing, really, for their sacrifice. Nothing but long lines at an underfunded VA to get their teeth fixed or their prosthetics fitted. After this much, they are on their own. They get a stipend from the government, yes, they do and I guess with the materialism of America we assume if they get a penny they get enough. More of the fussing over deficits, I guess. Calling such a thing an "entitlement" and then disparaging it is the ultimate selfishness. These people, who fought for us and came back without a leg or with emotional scars that force them to relive traumas over and over again, these people need more from us than yellow ribbons and flag waving.

I realize that America has become more "war friendly" since the days of Viet Nam. The spitting on soldiers is something we are all ashamed of. But supporting wars, just any old war, is not the way to make up for this. Supporting our troops is always important, but why is it limited to only when they are at war and not after? It was, after all, after the boys from Nam returned that people treated them so horribly. And they were DRAFTED, not volunteers and did not deserve disdain. Today, I guess, there is the excuse that "they signed up for this", but how many excuses are you going to make? How many times are you going to say "well, she deserved it because she wore a short skirt"? How many times are you going to say, "well, he shouldn't have been out in the dark alone?" These are the things people say when horrible things happen to their neighbors. But these particular neighbors went and fought a war for your freedoms, for your right to wear that short skirt. So when you dismiss violations of our freedoms in favor of feelings of safety, you dismiss the very reason these people took a bullet in the first place!

According to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, the nation's homeless vets are mostly male, as only about 5% are female. The majority of them are single, come from urban areas and now suffer from mental illness, alcohol or drug dependancies or any combination of recurring mental and physical disorders. These people make up one third of the nations' homeless population. These figures come from the VA.

Many of these lost souls have served in World War II, the Korean War, Cold War, Vietnam War, Grenada, Panama, Lebanon, Afghanistan and Iraq (OEF/OIF), and the military’s anti-drug cultivation efforts in South America. Nearly half of all homeless veterans served in Viet Nam. Most of them, as many as 2/3 of them, served at least 3 years and the other third were stationed in war zones. Not every disease or injury is war related. On average, 56% of homeless veterans are black or hispanic. This is a very large number considering that these groups independantly make up less than 16% of the American population, or a total of 29% combined. And, then, on top of these numbers, among those who are not yet homeless, as many as 1.5 million are at risk. Most of these veterans struggle with poverty, lack of support (from the government, the community and family) and generally live in dismal quarters that are overcrowded and substandard.

Although there is no way to know for sure how many are homeless, as so many are transient and do not report to the VA, the estimates are pretty accurate overall. The current estimation is that 107,000 veterans are currently homeless on any given night. Over the course of a year, approximately twice that many are homeless, again on any given night. Do you realize that only 1/8 of the general population can claim veteran status, but nearly 1/5 of the homeless population are veterans?!! I would like to know why this is so. Why aren't we helping our wounded warriors?

Part of the reason is intolerance and misplaced patriotism. Many people have drank the kool aid and follow the lead of the Pentagon, who are always saying that war doesn't cause this problem, this is a personal problem or a community problem, or whatever, as long as the war hawks don't take the blame at the polls or the government has to pay out too many claims. As I said earlier, it took them until just recently to admit that the defoliant Agent Orange may have caused health problems in veterans and although late is better than never, this so late in the game that many who fell ill are dead and will never receive a single cent in recompense. But not to saddle all the blame on apathy and patriotism, there are many complex factors that contribute to this problem.

One of them is an extreme shortage of affordable housing, livable income and access to health care. With the current job crisis putting ordinary citizens out of work, who is hiring damaged goods like vets? Health care is another issue. Many of these vets are sick, both physically and mentally, and need care. But care is expensive and difficult to get, even with the VA, which is often only in one section of town, hard to access, overcrowded and understaffed. Affordable housing is another big problem in America, where everyone is busy building high dollar properties for the rich, the upwardly mobile or the upper middle class. Affordable housing in the minds of many translates into slums and this is not wanted in most communities. So where do the poverty struck, mentally ill veterans sleep? In the woods, on the sidewalks, on the park benches and in small tent communities they create among themselves. I would think, just using a rational mind, that it would be nicer to have slums in a community than to have homeless camps all over the place. But that's just me.

Also, a large number of displaced and at-risk veterans live with lingering effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance abuse, which are compounded by a lack of family and social support networks. This is why so many are single. Those that come back to wives and their families have a better chance at survival. Even the support of parents or siblings would be desirable but it isn't always available. But just getting tired of the drama or the hassle of caring for someone who comes back damaged is not a good enough excuse to drop out. When someone needs help, it is the responsible of family, of community, of church and, even, at times, government, to lend a hand. Most especially, in the case of veterans, it's our government that needs to step up. It is, after all, the goverment that declares war, recruits young soldiers and sends them off to come back damaged and unable to cope with life. In reality, the top priority for homeless vets is secure, safe, clean housing that offers a supportive environment free of drugs and alcohol. This is something only the government can provide.

Another big problem arises in the area of government money for housing. Because most homeless vets are single males, they don't qualify for existing programs. Most housing money is devoted to helping homeless families (married couples with children) or homeless women with children in their care. This is understandble. All of us feel that tugging in our hearts when we see children sleeping in the streets, eating out of garbage cans or begging for cash. But why do we not feel this way about our veterans? Aren't they just as blameless for what happened to them as children? After all, they didn't declare war, congress did. And here we are with our government dickering over knickels and dimes when it comes to vets and lavishing money on personal projects that get them re elected.

Yes, to a certain extent, there is funding going to homeless vets. The VA has a specialized homeless program that served more than 92,000 homeless vets in year 2009 and this is highly commendable. But, in fact, this is all that anyone is doing and this effort still leaves over 100,000 vets out in the cold. These soldiers must seek assistance from local government agencies and community- and faith-based service organizations. Does this work for you? Does helping only half the population feel right to you? After all of them went to war and suffered? How do you pick and choose which ones to help, after all? To their credit, since 1987, the VA and it's program for homeless vets, have collaborated with community service providers to get vets off the streets. Some estimates have that number now at half. In the past six years, these organizations have succeeded in moving over half of the country's homeless vets off the streets and into housing of some sort.

In conjunction with state based food stamp programs, these efforts help get a roof over the heads of many homeless veterans and make sure they are fed. But other things are needed. Is it just enough for you? A roof and a meal? Consider that they also need physical health care, in some cases mental health care, detox or rehab for addictions, counseling, personal development coaching and job training. Viable employment is the next big thing on the agenda; we need much more focus on job training and availability so that homeless vets can get back to being useful contributors to the community. And it is the community where all of this must start.

The most effective programs for homeless and at-risk veterans are community-based, nonprofit, “veterans helping veterans” groups and charities. Programs that seem to work offer transitional housing with the camaraderie of living in structured, substance-free environments with fellow veterans who are succeeding at bettering themselves. This gives the soldiers a sense of family and shared experience. Government money, while important, is currently limited, and available services are often at capacity. It is critical, therefore, that community groups and charities reach out to help provide the support, resources and opportunities most Americans take for granted: housing, employment and health care.

In this direction, the VA has approximately 4,000 agreements with community partners nationwide. These sorts of artnerships have shown that groups are most successful when they work with federal, state and local government agencies, other homeless providers and veteran service organizations. Veterans who participate in these collaborative programs are afforded more services and have higher chances of becoming tax-paying, productive citizens again.

This charity builds specially adapted homes for severly injured veterans at no cost to the vet. They are strongly committed to helping those who have selflessly given to our country and have returned home with serious disabilities. They have been doing this since September 11, 2001. This wonderful charity feels it is their duty and honor to assist severely injured Servicemen and Servicewomen and their immediate families by raising donations of money, building materials and professional labor and to coordinate the process of building a home that provides maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently.

The homes provided by Homes for Our Troops are given at NO COST to the Veterans we serve. In some instances, an eligible Veteran or service member may receive a Veterans Administration Specially Adapted Housing Grant up to a maximum amount of $63,780. Homes for Our Troops’ assistance covers all costs over and above this grant and works closely with the VA to ensure that when our resources are combined, the home is provided at no cost to the recipient.

September 11, 2001 was a life-changing experience for all Americans. The resulting military deployments of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and subsequently, Operation Enduring Freedom have profoundly changed the lives of many American service members.

After watching a news story on television about a soldier that lost both of his legs due to a roadside bomb in Iraq, John Gonsalves, a construction supervisor from Raynham, Massachusetts wondered what was being done to support our men and women who had sacrificed so much for our country. He set out on a mission to volunteer his time and expertise that he possessed in building homes that met the requirement of the Americans with Disabilities Act to an organization that provides such services for those most severely injured as a result of combat.

Mr. Gonsalves was dismayed when he could not find an organization that was supporting such a mission. With an escalating urge to fulfill an unmet need, he knew needed to find a way to help these men and women that were returning from combat severely injured. Traveling to military hospitals to visit with injured and their families, speaking with Veterans’ organizations, and researching the difficulties facing America’s injured service members as they tried to find specially adapted and barrier-free homes, John realized most existing handicapped housing did not take into consideration the types of disabilities incurred in combat therefore, adequate homes did not exist in the marketplace. In February 2004, John founded Homes for Our Troops.

When asked about starting a new non-profit organization, John Gonsalves said, "Starting up a non-profit organization was a field as far away from supervising construction projects as it gets. It’s been a learning experience, and tremendously rewarding. The outpouring of generosity from our citizens at times is overwhelming. The Veterans I have met along the way have touched my heart and I am honored to have them as my friends. Homes for Our Troops is dedicated to providing specially adapted homes for disabled Veterans as long as there is a need."

As the leader of the Homes for Our Troops organization, Mr. Gonsalves is committed to maintaining the highest professional standards, keeping it financially efficient and professionally staffed with dedicated personnel. His efforts were recently rewarded when the American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP), one of the country’s premier charity watchdog organizations, reviewed Homes For Our Troops’ finances and included the organization in their Top-Rated Veterans & Military Charities listing with an "A" rating. WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP

First and foremost, you can donate time or money. If you have the time to volunteer, then here are some ideas:

1. Determine the need in your community. Visit with homeless veteran providers. Contact your mayor’s office for a list of providers, or search the NCHV database.

2. Involve others. If you are not already part of an organization, align yourself with a few other people who are interested in attacking this issue.

3. Participate in local homeless coalitions. Chances are, there is one in your community. If not, this could be the time to bring people together around this critical need.

Most communities have encouraged the development of high priced housing at the expense of most average citizens, whose fortunes rise and fall. The old idea of life time employment and retirement with a pension is a thing of the distant past. Today, many people change jobs several times in their lifetimes and spend some time on unemployment or without an income.

Encouraging your community to build more medium income housing is to everyone's benefit, especially veterans, who come back here unprepared to enter the workforce quickly. With current unemployment at record high levels, the chances for these young men are even slimmer. Affordable housing, not slums or homeless camps, are the solution. Encourage your community leaders to persue this idea rather than focus on upscale development that so many can no longer afford.

Abduction, Missing Persons and Human Trafficking

It is on the news every night. You see it on Nancy Grace, Jane Valez Mitchell, 48 Hours Mystery, Dateline and Missing USA. TruTV has made a business of telling these tales, enough of them it seems to fill every time slot on that station every day of the week. And it does appear that every time we turn around we hear about another person who has disappeared. Some of these people turn up dead, the victims of friends, relatives, lovers, strangers or serial killers. But many of them, some say most of them, go into oblivion forever. This is not to mention the cold cases that stack into the hundreds of thousands nationwide and may never been solved. Although many of these cases date back decades, most of them are within our lifetimes. So what is going on? What is causing all this to happen? Who is taking these people and why? Granted, many of them are dead and just not found yet. Many have been murdered, dismembered, tossed in rivers or lakes, burned to ash or buried under buildings or foundations. This type of recovery is very difficult and most of these bodies will never come home. Others are run aways, people who have chosen to ditch their lives, to leave their friends and family, to pursue a dream elsewhere. But these number few in the face of the numbers we are talking about.

Abductions. Kidnappings. Disappearances. Missing Persons. Some people just disappear from a normal scenario, such as watering their lawns or getting the mail. Others go shopping and never come home. The misery of their friends, family and neighbors cannot be fathomed or appreciated. And those of you who are compassionate and who care, as well, know how painful these events can be. And who knows who's next? It seems like anyone is a target. Most of the time it's women or girls but it is also often men and boys. Men and boys do not get the media attention that women and girls get which is sad and unfair. As well, unattractive and ethnic victims do not get the media spotlight either. But in reality it is every sex, every race, every age and every social strata that is in danger. Rich or poor. Young or old. Fat or thin. Black or white. It just doesn't matter. People are disappearing in large numbers and the only people paying attention are the police in their hometowns. Most of these cases end up being nothing more than some paperwork and evidence in a white cardboard box on a shelf in the cold case room.

Here are the facts. Twenty seven million people are bought and sold around the world every day. That’s enough people to make an entire new country. And I said day.. not year. Let that sink in. These people are trafficked in a world market that knows no bounds. As slaves, they have no right to their own life. Once they are taken, they no longer have means, money or social power. They become victims. Total and utter victims to their traffickers, who control their every move. They are not allowed even the simplest amenities or luxuries that most of us take for granted. Every penny of the money they are forced to earn is taken from them and most of them live in conditions we wouldn't force our dogs to endure. But no one is safe. These people extract their victims from their own communities, family neighborhoods, places where people feel safe. More often than not they transport them into other cultures, stripping them of any sense of belonging and turning them into faceless nobodies. However, there are also those who snatch their victims from schools, playgrounds and neighborhoods only to take them two doors down and make them slaves right in the very same suburbs where they used to live freely. Many a teenaged girl has been stolen from a sleep over or a birthday party to be turned into a sex slave right in her own neighborhood, sold to men who line up for a chance to have forced sex with a child. Men who pay on average $50 a pop to destroy a young girls hopes and dreams and turn her into a half dead toy. This is the height of cruelty and selfishness and is a horrible reflection on the depths of depravity to which our society has fallen.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? SEE BELOW

The victims are made completely powerless and forced to do unspeakable things most of the time. Although there are those who are taken to work in the fields or wash dishes in a private home, often for no money. Similar to sweatshop workers in third world countries these human beings become victims of their circumstances and cannot get free. The kind of energy, initiative, bravery and skill it would take for these children to finagle their freedom is prohibitive and unexpected. They are, literally, doomed. They are doomed to work like dogs at some distasteful and horrible occupation, something most Americans would shudder at the thought of, their entire lives, day in and day out, without break or recourse, and without reward. It is, again, a life you would not wish on your enemy. And these are not scum. These are not people who did the "wrong thing" or made a mistake. They were getting on an airplane or walking to school or getting their mail or getting out of their car at the mall. In most cases they do not have to agree to anything or accept an invitation for this happen to them. In fact, most of them don't even know what's happened until it's too late.

In short, every single year over 2 million women and children are sold into slavery around the world. This number is an estimate based on the number of missing persons worldwide and may be conservative. There is no doubt the number is growing as criminals become more aware at how lucrative this business is. In some cases, mostly in the third world, where people are already starving, human traffickers lure their victims in with promises of a better life and enticing job opportunities only to trap them, girls often as young as 11-years-old, in a horrific cycle of abuse. The brothels in Indonesia, Thailand and especially the Middle East, are packed full of blonde, white children taken from countries like Bulgaria, Albania, Siberia and Slovakia, where the families are so poor the children have no future. But even a future of working for pennies and living in a slum is far better than a life as a sex slave. And here is the thing: most of these brothels are visited by rich, white American men. Yes, the US is a leading customer in the sex trade worldwide. Doesn't this make you feel ashamed? And who are these men? No, they are mostly not common criminals. Most of them are middle class or upper class gentlemen who work in professions here in the states and have private perversions. These men are a part of our private pedophile plague that fuels the news of murdered children every day. They just take their perversities to poor countries where desperate criminals allow them to do to these children what we would never allow anyone to do to ours. Is this fair? Is this life better than the life of a 3 year old child who is raped and then killed? These children are raped over and over again their entire short lives and they are usually dead or killed, too, long before they grow up.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? SEE BELOW

So the facts of human trafficking are this. Dan Rather did a news report on this problem and voiced it this way: "From child soldiers to child prostitutes, the sexual exploitation and abuse of children from countries all over the world, including the United States, has reached epic proportions. " And he is not kidding or exaggerating. He advances that over a million children are forced into sexual work or raped routinely in the course of their other slave labor. He also qualifies a million children as a "conservative estimate". Doesn't this just make your skin crawl? Think of the kids you know; think of yourself as a child.. .and imagine a life like this. Imagine this horror being your life for as long as you live. The only relief for these children is death and, fortunately or unfortunately, depending upon your view, it comes early in most cases. Few of them live past 19.

If you think hard about this, you will realize you have head of it before. It has long been known that the majority of women in sexual work occupations have either suffered sexual assault as a child from a trusted family member or been forced into sex work in adolescence. Even when I was growing up, back in the 1960s, there were stories told about girls who were talked into prostitution after running away and finding themselve hungry on the streets. These girls were usually running from abusive homes to start with, often homes where male relatives had raped them. I have personally known quite a few women who were molested or raped by their fathers or other male relative. In fact, the numbers are great enough to say it is 1 out of 3. Among the people I know, that is. But that is another issue for another post. But you have to realize that it is this early abuse that makes some of these girls more apt to be victims. Very few of these girls are as lucky as Oprah Winfrey. In fact, almost none of them are.

But there is little hope of putting an end to human trafficking as long as there are people who are willing to take advantage of others in this way. The astounding amount of money earned in the underground economy of forced sex work may be the largest business on earth. Here, in the US, we often have sparkling success stories to tell about women who have made it big in "porn". We know their names and faces. They are envied and adored. Men justify their proclivity for watching women have sex by discussing the money these women make and how much power they have over men. But these women are a minority and many of them also have horror stories to tell. Lives lived on drugs and alcohol, hazy memories of having sex with many different men, diseases they can't overcome, dieing young. But they are the fortunate ones. They had a choice. They chose the lives they are living and that is what America is about. That is what we cherish so much. Freedom of choice.

So this the greatest sin of a Democracy. To allow slavery in it's midst. And please don't make the mistake of excusing all of this as a problem somewhere else and not here. It is easy to believe that Americans wouldn't do this sort of thing and that it only goes on in shabby places. America is far shabbier than you would want to believe. It is exactly because most Americans are in denial about this matter (and perhaps many others, as well) that it has flourished to astonishing levels. Dan Rather's undercover investigation and report on child prostitution in this country uncovered things that he, himself, could hardly believe. He even admitted that he would rather not believe it. And if he hadn't seen it with his own eyes... he might not have. But prostitution of children under the age of 18 is a huge business in this country. They are everywhere even if you choose not to see. And they are not all children from the ghetto or runaways from broken homes. In fact, it's children from all areas of this country and the demand is so great that they can hardly fill it with the kids they have so they are always grabbing more! In fact, this business is booming. One of the worst areas for it runs from Seattle to Portland, from San Francisco and Los Angeles, and to Las Vegas. But no place in the country is immune.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP? SEE BELOW

In a typical suburban seduction scenario, girls, sometimes as young as 12, are lured by a "front man" in his mid-to-late teens. He becomes her "boyfriend," taking her to dinner, buying her nice things, sometimes meeting her parents. The girl eventually moves in with him. Then he says they need money to continue being together. First, she's enticed to sleep with his friends to pay the rent. Soon she's turning tricks for what police say is an endless supply of older men willing to pay top money for sex with very young girls. Other times convincing the young adolescent girls to sell themselves happens very quickly. One cop put it this way, "If you had told me three years ago that a 14-year-old girl would go to a food court, meet a guy, and three hours later be selling herself, I'd 'a said, no frigging way." And, yet, this is happening every single day and in numbers that should make you sick. To imagine eighty-year-old men paying a premium to violate teenage girls, sometimes supplied by former drug gangs now into child sex trafficking, is not a pretty picture. But it's an accurate one. In truth, this happens every single day in America.

And more and more criminals are switching to this crime. The war on drugs has made some inroads here in America, where it is possible to be arrested for selling drugs and to spend a lot of time in jail for doing so. But no such war on sex crime exists. An average pimp with one kid can make up to $800 or $l,000 a day. That's seven days a week, 30 days a month! These pimps usually have a stable of young kids, mostly girls, all of whom they control in some fashion and have working all the time. No wonder so many criminals in the drug trade have turned to it as a safer field than selling dope. There's less chance of being caught, less chance of being prosecuted if caught and lighter sentences -- if any -- if convicted. There is no "war on sex crime" or "war on slavery". In fact, the efforts to stem this trade is weak and feeble, at best. So whatever the numbers are or however the police may fight it, this is a national outrage and disgrace. And the problem is growing, not diminishing.

Although sex trafficking makes up a huge number of victims in the slavery trade, it is not the only way in which people are used. Child labor is another reason why people are abducted and trafficked. In fact, this is the number one reason that young men and boys are taken. Although a small number of the boys that are abducted are used in gay porn, snuff films and child porn, the vast majority are put to work and often for no money at all. Overseas, children are lured by offers of schooling and the promise of making money, which they desire greatly but feel is beyond their reach. Then, in turn, these children are forced to work in brothels, mines and sweat shops. They work excessively long hours and routinely face violence, intimidation, sexual assault and other maltreatment by overseers. Few receive any wages and those that do barely receive enough to make it through a single day. None of them remain with family or have a home to call their own. In some poor countries, like Albania, for instance, children are sold to traffickers by their families for much needed cash or valuable goods.

Here in the United States, children are put to work as low paid slaves. We often hear the statement, "they are doing jobs Americans don't want". So, what are these jobs, anyways? Human Rights Watch reports that there are 300,000 to 400,000 child farmworkers in the U.S. today. These children typically work at least 10 hours a day, 5 to 7 days a week under the hot sun. Like adult farmworkers, they are paid less than the minimum wage, which is the reason people say these are jobs Americans don't want. These children work like dogs and experience further wage cuts because they are sometimes forced to purchase their own equipment, and employers often underreport their hours. According to the Center for Disease Control's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), agriculture is a very dangerous occupation for children. Workers are exposed to dangerous pesticides, risk brutal injuries and suffer heat illness and the youngest ones are four times more likely to die than children in other jobs. To make matters worse, they are often not given gloves or even shoes, and are also denied drinking water, hand-washing facilities or toilets. Through conducting interviews with children, HRW found that girls are often subjected to sexual abuse. They are subject to this abuse from both their overlords and from the men and boys in the same slave camp. If you think the way the blacks were treated in this country before the civil rights movement was bad, this has got to bother you as well.

Just to round all this up for you, I want to show you some statistics I picked up:

Human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world, second only to the drug trade. The market for slavery rivals the market for marijuana. Think about that.

130 countries are origin, transit or destination countries for human trafficking. The US is a leader in countries of destination.

Although the average age of trafficked children ranges from 9 to 19, 11 years of age is the most common age of a child that works in the sex industry. Some are as young as 5. I recently read a report out of Cambodia where the new rage in the industry is 3 year old girls. Imagine the life that these children lead.

One victim is trafficked across international borders every minute. That's every single minute of every day.

Right now, the Department of Justice estimates that as many as 200,000 U.S. children are at risk for commercial sexual exploitation. Many more than that will ultimately be taken.

Over 300,000 children are trafficked within the U.S. every year. These are known figures of children they have been able to track. The actual number is unknown and could be much higher. The worldwide figures are estimated at 1.2 million. This estimate was delivered by UNICEF.

Around the world, more than one million children are subjected to human trafficking for sex or porn alone. Many of the women and children that are missing from the United States are known to be working in porn overseas or in Canada

Human trafficking is a $32 billion dollar a year business. $100 million of this business annually is done in the D.C. Metropolitan area alone. Washington DC, the home of our government, and presumably, our laws, is a leader in both sex trafficking and in the use of human slaves. Although the FBI estimates the earnings at 9.5 billion worldwide, it is believed by experts that the numbers are closer to $32 billion.

The laws are weak in this area and need work! The average number of years that a U.S. citizen will spend in prison if they are convicted of traveling to another country to engage in child sexual tourism is only 30! 30 years for going overseas and having forced sex with a small child is getting less time in jail than smoking pot. This is outrageous. As long as we allow our citizens to engage in this behavior, not only does it ruin the lives of poor children the world over, it sends the wrong signals in our own communities. What moral difference does it make if it's your child... or someone elses?

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Now that you have the facts, you might be interested in knowing what you can do to help. Well, there are lots of ways. There is no one, single action you can take that will resolve the problem for good but contributions of various kinds are necessary. Without support the organizations that are trying to fight this will never succeed.

National Center for Missing and Exploited Children

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is the highest rated charity of it's kind. Most other charities in this category rate very poorly, with way too much money being spent on daily operations and salaries. Some of them may even be tax havens or a way to launder money. But the The National Center is a legitimate charity and you can see the details on the Charity Navigator Page link above. The Center still pays their CEO way too much but that will have to be reckoned with over time if they expect to become effective. They will have to be watched for money mistakes but for now, they are doing a pretty good job. Please don't make the CEO salary a reason for not helping children. This is the ONLY charity out there doing this job and doing it effectively.

Good things can be said for The Center. Administrative expenses have gone down consistantly every year since 2006. Funraising expenses have risen and fundraising efficiency has remained about the same. Revenue growth declined in 2007 but has risen since then. Contributions and program expenses revenue have both risen over the past few years but overall revenue has fallen. Program expenses have remained the same over the years but administrative expenses have fallen dramatically and this shows that they are getting their ship in order. Unfortunately, over the past few years, their rating at Charity Navigator has fallen from 4 stars to 3. This is still a very high rating as charities go but the loss of a star is significant. It is my guess this is because of the CEO salary. You can read a bio of their CEO, HERE .

Mr. Ernest Allen is the CEO for the Center. He is a hall of honor inductee at the College of Arts and Sciences in Louisville, KY. He is cherished by the Center and compensated richly because, as the co-founder of The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, he has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the organization since 1989. Under his leadership, more than 116,000 children have been recovered and the organization has increased its recovery rate from 62% in 1990 to 96% today. This is remarkable and is one of the reasons this charity is so successful.

Mr. Allen has also brought technology and innovation to the Center, including age progression and forensic imaging of long-term missing children, a 24- hour missing children hotline, and training for more than 225,000 law enforcement officers. He established the CyberTipline, the 9-1-1 for the Internet, which has resulted in thousands of successful prosecutions, created the Financial Coalition Against Child Pornography to eradicate commercial child pornography, and launched a new unit to help U.S. Marshals track down more than 100,000 fugitive sex offenders. An active spokesman on the issue, Mr. Allen frequently appears on network news and other programs including “Oprah” and “Larry King Live”. Sign petitions! Believe it or not, these online petitions make a difference. When the numbers are large enough, it causes authorities to look at issues they would otherwise ignore. Founded in 1985, the Center for Victims of Torture (CVT) heals the wounds of torture on individuals, their families, and their communities and to stop torture worldwide. We work locally, nationally, and internationally to build healing communities where torture survivors feel welcomed, protected and healed. CVT fulfills this mission by providing services directly to torture survivors; training and providing capacity building support to professionals and organizations who work with torture survivors and refugees; conducting research on the effects of torture and on effective treatment methods to be sure that we are providing the best care we can to our clients; and advocating for public policy initiatives that will help heal survivors and put an end to the practice of torture.

International Justice Mission

Founded in 1997, International Justice Mission (IJM) is a human rights agency that secures justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. IJM lawyers, investigators and aftercare professionals work with local governments to ensure victim rescue, to prosecute perpetrators and to strengthen the community and civic factors that promote functioning public justice systems. Homes for our Troops

Homes for Our Troops, founded in 2004, is strongly committed to helping those who have selflessly given to their country and have returned home with serious disabilities and injuries. We assist severely injured servicemen and women and their immediate families by raising donations of money, building materials and professional labor and then coordinating the process of building a new home or adapting an existing home for handicapped accessibility. The finished home is then given to the veteran. All services provided by Homes for Our Troops are at no cost to the veterans we serve.

Operation Homefront

Operation Homefront provides emergency assistance and morale to our troops, to the families they leave behind, and to wounded warriors when they return home. Operation Homefront leads more than 4,500 volunteers in 30 chapters nationwide. Since its inception, Operation Homefront has provided critical assistance to more than 105,000 military families in need. Some of our most outstanding accomplishments are: more than 5 million dollars provided to military families in crises; goods and services valued at more than 6.5 million dollars to assist military families; and an excess of 20,000 care packages delivered to soldiers abroad with an additional 2,500 packages delivered to military families at home.

Army Emergency Relief

Established in 1942 by the Secretary of War, Army Emergency Relief (AER) is proud to have helped more than three million soldiers and their families overcome financial emergencies during these last 67 years. Since its founding, AER has always been where soldiers are stationed when they needed help. While active duty soldiers receive the bulk of our assistance, we continually help retired soldiers and widows/widowers also. We also have a robust education scholarship program that provides financial support for both dependent children and spouses.

Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust

The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Charitable Service Trust supports physical and psychological rehabilitation programs, meets the special needs of veterans with specific disabilities - such as amputation and blindness - and aids and shelters homeless veterans. Programs supported by the Trust target several groups of physically and psychologically disabled veterans. Key programs include: helping to maintain a volunteer-operated transportation network providing rides to sick and disabled veterans needing transportation to and from VA medical centers for treatment; providing food and shelter and connecting homeless and needy veterans to essential medical care, VA benefits counseling and job training; supporting significant therapeutic initiatives; and many more.

National Military Family Association

National Military Family Association is the only national organization that for more than 40 years has represented officer and enlisted families of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Public Health Service. We help those seeking resources for: themselves and combat-weary service members returning home from war with fragile mental heath, for optimistic-but-anxious children separated from parents during deployments, for spouses forging ahead with educations to build better lives for their families or to prepare for the unthinkable, for widows seeking information about benefits available to them as they cope with their losses, and for proud parents of single service members. We identify and work with others to resolve emerging military family-related issues.

Special Operations Warrior Foundation

The Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF) was founded in 1980 to provide support and assistance to the U. S. military's special operations community, which consist Army Special Forces (Green Berets), the Army's 75th Ranger Regiment, the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Navy Small Boat Teams, Navy SEALs, Air Force Combat Controllers, Air Force rotary and fixed wing squadrons, and Marine Corps special operations personnel. SOWF's mission includes two major aspects in support of special operations personnel: providing a full college education to the surviving children of those who lose their lives while serving in the U.S. military special operations community, and providing immediate financial assistance and support to ensure that severely wounded personnel are able to have their loved ones at their bedside during recovery.

Founded in 2001, Oceana is the largest international group focused solely on ocean conservation. Our offices in North America, South America and Europe, work together on a limited number of strategic, directed campaigns to achieve measurable outcomes that will help return our oceans to former levels of abundance. Surfrider Foundation

Founded in 1984, the Surfrider Foundation is a grassroots environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world's oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education. These Ocean Wavemakers work to clean up and protect the waters of the New York Bight. Clean Ocean Action stops ocean pollution with a continuous, relentless effort using research, education, and citizen action to convince our public officials to enact and enforce strict laws to protect our marine resources for today's and future generations.

Founded in 2003, Blue Ocean Institute is the only conservation organization that uses science, art, and literature to inspire a closer bond with nature, especially the sea. We translate scientific information into language people can understand and use to make better choices on behalf of the sea. Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences

Founded in 1903 as the Bermuda Biological Station, the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) works to transform the fields of oceanography, marine science, and ocean health through a blend of cutting edge research, comprehensive educational experiences and a commitment to share our knowledge internationally. BIOS was set up to take advantage of the ideal location for deep-ocean and coral reef research and education. We bring about far-reaching change by enforcing and strengthening environmental laws on behalf of hundreds of organizations, coalitions and communities. Established as the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund in 1971, Earthjustice has a legal staff of more than 50 in eight offices around the country. Earthjustice uses federal and state environmental laws to protect the environment by taking government agencies to court for failing to enforce our nation's environmental laws, and corporations for breaking them. Earthjustice does this work on behalf of hundreds of community and environmental groups, providing legal services free of charge.

Animal Place

Animal Place, founded in 1989, is a sanctuary for abused and discarded farmed animals. Rescued individuals and indigenous wildlife share 60 acres of forest, meadow, pasture, hills and a small lake. Animal Place is also a humane education center that works to promote cruelty-free lifestyles and veganism. Doctors Without Borders, USA (DWB-USA) was founded in 1990 in New York City to raise funds, create awareness, recruit field staff, and advocate with the United Nations and US government on humanitarian concerns. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international medical humanitarian organization that provides aid in nearly 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care, or natural disasters. In 2007, MSF-USA raised $152.1 million and sent 200 aid workers to work overseas.

Catholic Medical Mission Board

Founded in 1928 and rooted in the healing ministry of Jesus, Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB) works collaboratively to provide quality healthcare programs and services, without discrimination, to people in need around the world. CMMB programs and initiatives concentrate on making healthcare available to all, and particularly on the well-being of women and children in the developing world. National Partnership for Women and Families

Doorways for Women and Families

Founded in 1978, Doorways for Women and Families strives to end homelessness and family and intimate partner violence by offering safe shelter and housing, life-changing support services, and community advocacy. We operate a domestic violence hotline and provide 24/7 shelter and housing through a Domestic Violence Safehouse (11 beds), Family Home (21 beds), and HomeStart Supportive Housing Program serving 20 households at a time. We also provide support and advocacy, financial literacy counseling, children's services and a range of essential life skills promoting healthy, vibrant living. We serve more than 1,400 people per year, and more than half of the people in our housing programs are children.

Fresh Start Women's Foundation

Formed in 1992, the Fresh Start Women's Foundation is dedicated to helping empower women through the services of the Jewell McFarland Lewis-Fresh Start Women's Resource Center. This Center, the first comprehensive self-help center for women in the country, opened in October, 2002 and is currently accommodating more than 2,500 visits a month by women hoping to improve their lives. The Center is designed for women ages 18 years or older who are seeking information, resources and assistance in their quest for emotional and financial independence.

The LPGA Foundation

Established in 1991, The LPGA Foundation empowers and support girls and women through developmental and humanitarian golf initiatives. We aim to be a leader in improving the lives of girls and women through the game of golf. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), founded in 1993 by Evelyn H. Food for the Poor

Food For The Poor (FFP) ministers to spiritually renew impoverished people throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Established in 1982, FFP's goals are to improve the health, economic, social and spiritual conditions of the men, women and children we serve. Food For The Poor raises funds and provides direct relief assistance to the poor, usually by purchasing specifically requested materials and distributing them through the churches and charity organizations already operating in areas of need. Since its founding FFP has distributed more than 48,000 tractor-trailer loads of aid to the poor. We have also built more than 55,000 housing units for people desperately in need of adequate shelter, and completed more than 750 water projects that provide lifesaving water and sanitation to hundreds of thousands of villagers in need.

Christ for Humanity

Founded in 1992, Christ for Humanity (CFH) is a humanitarian aid and short-term mission sending organization serving the needs of the disadvantaged in the United States and abroad. CFH receives donations of food, clothing, and medical supplies from business and medical communities, churches, and caring individuals. CFH distributes these supplies at no cost to missionaries, healthcare workers, or other ministries working in almost 40 countries worldwide to enhance their outreach to the poor. CFH also sponsors several short-term missions around the world utilizing humanitarian aid and evangelism.

HOPE International

Founded in 1997, HOPE International (HOPE) is a Christian faith-based non-profit organization focused on alleviating physical and spiritual poverty through microenterprise development. HOPE believes that microfinance can be a powerful force in changing the world for the better and that loving people as Christ loved others means caring for both physical and spiritual needs. HOPE practices a holistic approach to poverty alleviation. Microcredit and basic business training enable individuals to build businesses and break free from physical poverty. Clients find that their increased income enables them to provide more nutritious and regular meals as well as improved housing and education for their children.

United Negro College Fund (UNCF)

Since its inception in 1944, UNCF has grown to become the nation's oldest and most successful African American higher education assistance organization. Our mission is to enhance the quality of education by providing financial assistance to deserving students, raising operating funds for member colleges and universities, and increasing access to technology for students and faculty at historically black colleges and universities. UNCF helps promising students attend college and graduate by providing operating funds for its 39 member colleges, administering 400 scholarship and internship programs, and serving as a national advocate for the importance of minority higher education by representing the public policy interests of its students and member colleges.

Water For People

Founded in 1991, Water For People (WFP) helps people in developing countries improve their quality of life by supporting the development of locally sustainable drinking water resources, sanitation facilities and health and hygiene education programs. Our vision is a world where all people have access to safe drinking water and sanitation; a world where no one suffers or dies from a water- or sanitation-related disease. Water For People works with highly trained and reputable local nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in many of its programs. Some of these NGOs include Peace Corps, CARE, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Rotary International and hundreds of other local groups. American Civil Liberties Union Foundation -ACLU

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Foundation is the arm of the ACLU that conducts litigation and communication efforts. The Foundation provides legal presentation in cases involving issues of civil liberties and constitutional rights ranging from administrative hearings to trials and appeals. In addition, the Foundation educates the public as to civil liberties and constitutional rights by disseminating literature and other publications. The ACLU Foundation preserves and promotes civil rights and liberties as guaranteed by the United States Constitution.

The New World Foundation

The New World Foundation supports community activists across America and around the world. We believe global and national social change begins at the local level. We have helped progressive activists build stronger alliances for social justice, civil rights, and economic and electoral issues since 1954. We have distributed nearly $50,000,000 to grantees over the last 15 years. New World contributes resources to promote democratic action and participation, so people can make a difference for themselves. Through partnerships with donors and our own endowment, our grantmaking in 2008-9 will exceed 10 million dollars.

National Council of La Raza

Founded in 1968, the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) is the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States and works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans. Through its network of nearly 300 affiliated community-based organizations, NCLR reaches millions of Hispanics each year in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. To achieve its mission, NCLR conducts applied research, policy analysis, and advocacy, providing a Latino perspective in five key areas: assets/investments, civil rights/immigration, education, employment and economic status, and health. The Advocates for Human Rights

The Advocates for Human Rights (formerly Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights) is an organization dedicated to the promotion and protection of internationally recognized human rights. The Advocates provides investigative fact finding, direct legal representation, collaboration for education and training, and a broad distribution of publications. The Advocates has produced more than 81 reports documenting human rights practices in more than 22 countries. Every year, The Advocates educates over 8,000 students and community members on human rights issues, and provides legal representation and assistance to over 1,000 disadvantaged individuals and families.

National Coalition for the Homeless

The National Coalition for the Homeless is a national network of people who are currently experiencing or who have experienced homelessness, activists and advocates, community-based and faith-based service providers, and others committed to a single mission. That mission, our common bond, is to end homelessness. We are committed to creating the systemic and attitudinal changes necessary to prevent and end homelessness. At the same time, we work to meet the immediate needs of people who are currently experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of doing so. We focus our work in the following four areas: housing justice, economic justice, health care justice, and civil rights.

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

Founded in 1985, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is an organization supported by doctors and laypersons working together for compassionate and effective medical practice, research, and health promotion. We encourage higher standards for ethics and effectiveness in research by opposing unethical human experiments and promoting alternatives to animal research. PCRM has led the way for reforms of federal nutrition policies. Our clinical research programs are breaking new ground in diabetes, cancer, and other serious conditions, and our public service announcements feature medical experts on prevention and health.

Alliance for Global Justice

Alliance for Global Justice works to achieve social change and economic justice by helping to build a stronger more unified grassroots movement. We recognize that the concentration of wealth and power is the root cause of oppression requiring us to work together across ideologies, issues and communities. The Alliance nurtures organizations seeking fundamental change in international and national conditions that disempower people, create disparities in access to wealth and power, poison the earth, and plunder its resources. Our commitment to solidarity and to non-hierarchical democratic process enables us to respectfully listen and respond to each other within the movement. The Nicaragua Network, Campaign for Labor Rights, and Venezuela Solidarity Network are the three core projects of the Alliance.

SOS Childrens Villages- Florida

SOS Children's Villages - Florida offers our foster children the benefits of family life and a brighter future. For the past sixteen years, SOS has helped raised more than 250 boys and girls. Together we have pledged and fulfilled the promise of healing, hope and home for every child. Once a child turns 18, they are considered adults and are no longer part of foster care. However, that doesn't mean that they are no longer part of the SOS Family. Our After Care program provides support and services to help our young adults continue to pursue their dreams and succeed on their own.

Save the Children

Save the Children, founded in 1932, is the leading independent organization creating real and lasting change for children in need in the United States and around the world. Save the Children's unique self-help approach to relief, recovery and ongoing development has nurtured the seeds of hope for millions of children and their families. Our programs focus on the areas of: economic opportunities; education; emergencies; protection; health; hunger and malnutrition; and U.S. literacy and nutrition. We work in more than 50 countries, including the United States. We serve 48 million children and many others working to save and improve children's lives, including parents, community members, local organizations and government agencies.

The Childrens Aid Society

Founded in 1853, The Children's Aid Society (CAS) works to ensure the physical and emotional well-being of children and families, and to provide each child with the support and opportunities needed to become a happy, healthy and productive adult. CAS fills the gaps between what children deserve and what life has dealt them. We have been serving children for more than 150 years, a longevity that is a testament to our ability to adapt to the always changing needs of today's youth. Today CAS serves more than 150,000 children and their families at more than 45 sites throughout New York City.

International Childrens Fund

The International Children's Fund (ICF) has come to the aid of needy children worldwide since 1987. We have helped distribute life-saving food, clothing, and medicine across the African continent. We have also supported the construction of orphanages, churches, schools and vocational training centers, drilled water wells to provide safe drinking water, and established agricultural projects. Practical, direct grassroots action is the main focus of ICF. We channel the Christian concern of Americans into street level impact in African villages, where logistics often frustrate traditional relief efforts. The secret ingredient is a trustworthy network of local, native missionary partners, who personally shepherd gifts of food, clothing, medicine, equipment and funds to the places children need them most.

Children's Dream Fund

The Children's Dream Fund was founded in 1981 with the single purpose of fulfilling dreams for children ages 3-18 who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Referrals are received from several hospitals on Florida's west coast. Dreams vary greatly - from trips to Disney World, meetings with celebrities, computers, play sets, cruises and shopping sprees. Every child deserves hope and a dream. Our desire is to grant every eligible child's dream. The Children's Dream Fund operates out of an office in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida and serves children living in 20 counties in West Central Florida.

United States Fund for UNICEF

The United States Fund for UNICEF was founded in 1947 to support the work of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) by raising funds for its programs and increasing awareness of the challenges facing the world's children. The oldest of 37 national committees for UNICEF worldwide, we are part of a global effort to save, protect and improve children's lives. Every moment of every day, UNICEF is on the ground providing lifesaving help for children in need. We provide families with clean water and sanitation, we vaccinate against childhood illness, and we help protect children against malaria. We provide nourishment to fight malnutrition, and we care for children affected by AIDS. We protect children from abuse, and we give them an education. We are here to make sure that all children lead a healthy, humane, and dignified life.
